Polish American Congress

April, 1999

Dear Friends of Polonia:

The entry of Poland into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is one of the most significant events for the Polish nation in this century. Following a long history of incursions upon Poland's sovereignty, membership in the alliance finally ensures its peace, freedom and independence.

The hope for a free and democratic Poland did not arise yesterday. President Charles Rozmarek was a guiding light in the founding of the Polish American Congress in 1944, laying the groundwork for the decades of struggle that were to follow. H is successor, President Aloysius Mazewski, guided us through the difficult times of the Cold War between East and West, as well as the heroic and perilous events surrounding martial law in Poland itself.

The Polish American Congress and the Polish National Alliance are justly proud of the role their memberships have played in the effort to enroll Poland in the NATO. Through letters and petitions, educational forums, meetings with legislators and the dissemination of information, we endeavored to educate the publ ic and leaders al ike about the mutual advantages that Poland's membership in the alliance would bring. Happily, those endeavors were not in vain.

We are grateful to the American citizenry, which recognized the worth of including Poland into NATO, and to the members of the Senate, who approved the enlargement of NATO by an overwhelming affirmative vote. We are also thankful to all the fraternals and other organizations, both Polonian and those of diverse ethnic backgrounds, without whose labors and support Poland's dream would not have become a reality.

Sincerely,

Edward J. Moskal, President
