Swiety Mikolaj (St. Nicholas) The feast of St. Nicholas is December 6th. In Polish, St. Nicholas is "Sw. Mikolaj". On this day, in the tradition of St. Nicholas, people share little gifts as St. Nicholas was known to do as he visited the homes of people in the villages dressed in his bishop's robes. A Christmas custom celebrated today as a result of the early visits made by St. Nicholas is the candy cane given during the Christmas holidays. It is a simple treat symbolizing the shepherd's staff, which is carried by a bishop. Sw. Mikolaj is called the "Father of Christmas", known to children in America as "Santa Claus". The Museum Gift Shop Volunteers encourage you to give gifts this Christmas that reflect Polish heritage. As we mark the Feast Day of St. Nicholas, in Polish "Swiety Mikolaj", we ask you to share a small treat with family members and friends. As you prepare to give gifts during Christmas, we ask that you visit the Museum's Gift Shop link where you will find many reasonably priced items that reflect Polish heritage. |
