Kosciuszko Day Report 2007
On Saturday, February 3, 2007, Historic Philadelphia was once again filled with Polish American pride as people gathered to recognize the accomplishments of General Thaddeus Kosciuszko, an American Revolutionary War hero and freedom fighter for Poland. The 12 noon Tribute Ceremony at the Kosciuszko House, 3rd and Pine Streets in Philadelphia, marked a day of unity and pride.
Michael Blichasz, President of the Polish American Congress, Eastern Pennsylvania District, conducted the program and thanked everyone who attended the ceremony which commemorated another notable day in Polish American history.
The weather was cold, but the spirit was warm as elected officials, representatives from Polish American organizations, Polish & American Army Veterans, St. Adalbert Polish Language School and the "Harcerstwo" Polish Scouts welcomed General Kosciuszko, portrayed by Richard Klimek. The Polish American String Band provided music for the program and a mini-Kosciuszko Day Parade took place through Historic Philadelphia, which ended up at the Holiday Inn Hotel Ballroom at 4th and Arch Streets.
At the Holiday Inn, a luncheon program was conducted by Theresa Romanowski, Vice President of the Polish American Congress, Eastern Pennsylvania District. Msgr. Francis Feret, Pastor of St. Adalbert Church and PAC, Eastern Pennsylvania District Vice Chaplain, offered the Invocation, Judge Bernice Soban DeAngelis swore in the officers of the Polish American Congress, Eastern Pennsylvania District for 2007, and a play "The Seeds of Freedom" was presented by Family Stages, which was sponsored by the Copernicus Foundation and the Piszek Family. The play was very well received by everyone who attended and was a historical tribute to General Thaddeus Kosciuszko.
Also participating at the Kosciuszko Day ceremonies were Congressman Bob Brady, Jonathan Saidel, Senator Shirley Kitchen, Councilman William Greenlee, Councilman Jack Kelly, Councilwoman Joan Krajewski, Councilman Frank Rizzo, and Steve Sitarski from the National Park Service. Compliments to Irene Darlak who sang the National Anthems.
