On Saturday, February 2, 2013, Polish Americans and friends gathered for the Annual Tribute Ceremony in Historic Philadelphia to celebrate the life and accomplishments of General Thaddeus Kosciuszko. The event was held in the Holiday Inn Ballroom, 4th and Arch Streets, in Historic Philadelphia. The program began with a welcome by Michael Blichasz, President of the Polish American Congress, Eastern Pennsylvania District, which sponsors the annual tribute to General Kosciuszko.

The ceremony continued with the presentation of the American and Polish flags by the Polish Army Veterans Post 12 and the Frankford High School JROTC. Irene Darlak sang the American and Polish national anthems and the invocation was presented by Fr. Jan Palkowski, pastor of St. Adalbert Church in Port Richmond, Philadelphia. Guest speakers for the event were Philadelphia Councilman Mark Squilla, Councilman David Oh, Cynthia MacLeod, Superintendent of Philadelphia’s Historic National Park which administers the Kosciuszko House, and Tim Kuzma, National President of the Polish Falcons of America. They all spoke about the accomplishments of General Kosciuszko during his service to America and thanked the Polish American community for helping maintain Polish heritage in America with celebrations that highlight Polish American heroes, celebrate Polish customs and the language of the Polish people who first arrived in America at Jamestown, VA, in 1608.

Students from St. Adalbert Polish Language School presented a slide show with an historic outline of General Kosciuszko’s life, from his birth, years of services to America and Poland, and his final resting place in Wawel Castle in Krakow, Poland. The Polish Scouts Harcerstwo, “Port Richmond Group,” sang patriotic Polish selections and presented a tribute to the life of General Kosciuszko.

Special thanks to Theresa Romanowski and the Kosciuszko Tribute Committee for an outstanding event. Thanks to Agnieszka Dziedzic, President of St. Adalbert Polish Language School and Kasia Przybycien, Director of the Polish Scouts Port Richmond Troop, for conducting the youth program presentations. Following the program a photo of the participating groups and guests was taken. The ceremony was followed by the luncheon where Mr. Tim Kuzma, President of the National Polish Falcons of America, conducted the swearing in ceremony of the 2013 officers of the Polish American Congress, Eastern Pennsylvania District.

Now that repairs at the Kosciuszko House are completed, the PAC looks forward to holding its tribute ceremony at 3rd and Pine Streets in Historic Philadelphia next year. You can visit the Kosciuszko House, open Wednesday through Sunday from 12 noon to 4 P.M.
